A Modelling Portfolio Photoshoot in Historic Prague

It's been a very busy year for me as a photographer with 3 trips overseas, Prague, Paris and New York. It all started way back in April; which was a chilly spring in Prague. The trips were all for the White Caviar Life website, you can see it here. Although the schedule was quite hectic, during our second week I did manage some work on the side for myself; which is how this modelling portfolio photoshoot with Nikola from Czechoslovak Models came about. Although I have been to Europe before. Lets face it, for an Australian, everything old in Europe is NEW, so where better to shoot than our 15th century accommodation and then the entrance to the Terraced Castle Gardens; just down the street. Prague is quite compact and packs a lot in so it's like a series of endless photography locations! So here she is; if you like what you see please contact me about your modelling or fashion photography project!

Top Tips For Great Modelling Headshots

What is a Model Headshot and what makes it different to other pictures? The difference is what the picture is going to be used for. When you think about modelling, it's all about fashion photography and runway shows, it's clothing, products, fabulous magazine and web campaigns and of course the models themselves. A great headshot grabs the viewer and holds them. A great headshot is the tool to to launch a career, to book amazing fashion jobs, to be remembered by, it's a picture to never forget! That special photograph is very important and it's the photographer and their team working together with the model that creates that unforgettable image. Which is why you need a photographer who understands what fashion and modelling is all about. Scroll down for my Top Tips!

A selection of headshot photography to illustrate how to take modelling portfolio headshots - Photos by Kent Johnson.

So what are my Top Tips?

Find your angle –
left side right side, up or down. No two people are the same so as a photographer you need to find the angle that works for them. As a model it is helpful to know what angle works for you; this can help deliver better shots faster – but don't get too locked in; many photographers can find something new, a new you by changing the angle. So know what works but be ready to experiment too.

Get close -
there's a reason it's called a headshot! While the trends go from head and neck to mid chest; the classic headshot really is just the head. If you have great bone structure and well proportioned features with great symmetry, closer will work well for you. If your key look is your body, a longer shot may work better. Photographers, going in super close means it's time to change that wide angle for a telephoto, which is generally a much more flattering focal length to work with on a headshot.

It's you but it's not really a portrait -
This would have to be one of the most confusing and perhaps difficult to realise aspects of model headshot photography. This is a portrait but it needs to go into the fashion zone, the modelling zone and not the mum / dad / friends love me zone. And honestly it is something many photographers clearly don't get and many aspiring models too. If you are serious about being in the fashion industry you need to be in alignment with fashion. Wacky, “fun” or party-time with people cut out photographs just won't cut it. Go to the BIG modelling agency websites and look at the model portfolios online. Yes you can do that. See what they use – this is what you need.

Work with the best you can -
Which also means spend some money.. If you are yet to land an agent the easiest way to get a great headshot is to book a photographer that knows what they are doing! Yes you can go down the Gumtree/Facebook/Craigslist path but you may very well be wasting your time and end up with pictures that do not show your true potential – and that is a wrong turn that can easily be avoided. Cut to the chase; do your research, find a fashion or beauty photographer who shoots model portfolios; email them, book them – done!

Do a full portfolio shoot with a few headshots -
As a photographer photographing new talent, I like to work on headshots across a full portfolio photoshoot of three to five looks. Simply because everyone hits their peak on a shoot at a different point or with a different look. Working on headshots across the photoshoot allows for more choices once the shoot is done.  Yes you may end up with the tough – too many good shots to choose from problem, but I just call that the good problem and more shots to choose from is a great place to be.

So that's it; fashion and photography change all the time, but even as they change some things remain the same. The importance of a great headshot! And if you like what you see here, drop me a line to book your headshot photoshoot. www.kentjohnsonphotography.com.au/ModellingPortfolios.htm

Find & Work with Fashion Blogger Photographers in Sydney & the World

How do you find a professional photographer to help you take your blogging to the next level? One who you can collaborate with and afford to take pictures for your Blog? Here in Sydney, or anywhere else for that matter. It's a tricky question, and one that with over 10 years experience as both a photographer and blogger; I am more than qualified to share some thoughts and tips on. Helping you find and get the most from working with photographers, right here in Sydney or the rest of the world. And that includes me!
Title Image - Finding & Working with Fashion Blog Photographers in Sydney & the World - Article and photography by Kent Johnson.
Other than my own work here and on Street Fashion Sydney, I have been working with my partner Vivienne Shui on her blogs vivalaViv and now, luxury travel site White Caviar Life; where we have both learn't from each other; about leveraging up the quality of your work, collaborating and how to get the most from your creative vision. Just scroll down to learn more -

It's Time to Trade Up!

By now you have no doubt already asked many favours of camera owning friends, significant others and questioned just about everyone you know about the making and how-to of getting better pictures. Then comes the time when although you have the ideas; the pictures are just not coming out how you would like. It's time to start exploring the world of professional photographers and photography.
First stop; the internet!
Blogging is about being social, it's about developing friendships, so is photography too, but the way to find a photographer is through search; possibly why you are here right now! For search you will find Google is your new best friend. In the search box try, Your City - Sydney - Fashion or Lifestyle - Photographer.. and up will come some results (looks like I'm currently on page 2..) Then you need to start doing your research. Look carefully at the websites, take a detailed look. What sort of 'fashion' does this photographer do; does it fit my vision now - or where I want to my blog to go? If the answer is no; it's onto the next website; yes, bookmark it until you have seen a few more. You can also search on Instagram using #tags, #Sydneyphotographer #Photoshoot etc; check out fellow local bloggers @credits to see who they are shooting with too. One useful tip about looking at any photographers work, is deciding if it is consistent or not. If it's a bit all-over-the-place on their website, they may not be ready for your hard earned cash. Keep looking until you find a style that suits and consistency of work across their portfolio.

When you have seen enough websites or IG pages and found a few you like, its time to make contact. The first question to ask via email or even txt is if the photographer does blogger collaborations or has a special package? Unlike my model portfolio packages I don't have a set blogger package yet.. Mostly because different bloggers need different things - so at the moment, just ask me and let me know your needs and I will come up with a custom package just for you. Some photographers already have special blogger packages ready to go. But before you email any photographer about photoshoots, and this contact is usually best by email; here are some important things to think about.
Lifestyle pictures for social media and marketing by Kent Johnson.
Be realistic about your needs. Plan your shoots carefully around the pictures your blog post will need. Sounds obvious I know.. but time is money; and simply asking a Pro to take endless shots just hoping to get something right (might do ok..) but is unlikely to deliver the best results. How many outfits and how many types of shot? Full length and details are different pictures and while you can sometimes crop a detail from a bigger picture.. again, the best results happen when you know what you require beforehand; shoes, yes; full length, tick; earrings detail + necklace; that's a beauty shot - good, got it, done!
vivalaViv fashion blog photographs, blogger photographer collaboration with Vivienne Shui and Sydney photographer Kent Johnson.
My partner started her first blog with a rule to only ever use one shot per blog post - I know even I was shocked. Of course these days she uses more but how many do you need - Need to tell the story? Front, back, side, close-ups, a long shot? Maybe some scenery to set the mood too? OK it is not always possible to know exactly the number and best looks before the shoot, but if you have a plan; you are going to be more effective as a team coming up with the gold standard of shot you really need. Put together an outline and let the photographer know the details in writing before the shoot.

Ask for usage, not copyright. What! That's right and it's a biggie. A professional photographer is not going to sign over their image copyright to you for the kind of money we are most likely talking about here. But that is OK because you don't need the copyright, all you need is a usage agreement. So don't let copyright close down the conversation, think about what you need to use the pictures for. Your Instagram, Pintrest, Your Blog of course! But that's really it. If you are doing some thing with a brand, discuss this upfront. If it's simple cross tagging that's probably OK - if it's a campaign on the sly or by stealth.. your new friend the professional photographer can possibly help you cut a better deal; without anyone misrepresenting themselves. For many bloggers, this will be a non-issue; just ask that you can use the shots as Editorial on your site and social media platforms - confirm by email, and you will be good to go.

Gaz - Making a Splash with a Harbour Beach Modelling Portfolio Shoot

I am just going to admit right here and now that the idea of Gaz doing a post-swim beach shower shot was not mine. It was Gaz's idea; and I for one am glad he presented it to me so I could give it some thought as to how best make the shot. The thing with photographs, if they are not bad shots, they generally look easy to make. I mean they should look easy; who wants shots that make you wonder why it doesn't work.. You want pictures that make you think, "Wow" "that's great" "their a knockout" "I'd love to go there" that sort of thing - not gosh - "they really should learn something about styling or lighting or how to hold the camera straight.." You know what I mean; there's plenty of that on your Facebook page, Snapchat or Insta already.. So I did what any good photographer will do. I said, "great, but lets start over here first" which to be fair to myself was the right move because once you get wet you are no longer dry. Continued below - just scroll down!
Gaz, a strong, black and white mid shot, shit off, male modelling portfolio shot on Location in Sydney Australia by Kent Johnson.
So starting with our key looks first - full length, mid and head shots also gave me time to think about how the outdoor shower shot might work best. Initially the sun was still too high, the cliff on one side looked very dull and shaded; there was plenty to think about. So we got started on the 'simple' shots which also gives me time to get to know the model, let them get used to me and the camera; loosen up, and get that all important connection between the model and the camera happening. By the time we were done with those looks, the sun was lower; and I saw I could grab back-lit shots, the type I had been planning to do sometime at another Sydney beach; and also shoot out into the harbour for some blue water with well balanced light. Thanks Gaz for a great shoot. Need a folio, hit me up; I loved shooting this folio Makin' It Happen - Location Modelling Portfolio for Gaz,.
