Let's Make Photography Great Again!

One of the key things that has changed with photographing since the introduction of digital-photography that has taken hold - is the ease of getting an image out-of the camera. People with an 'eye' can look at their on-trend mood-board and copy a shot. Or at least try to copy a shot and still get some kind of facsimile. This ease of "you press the button the camera does the rest" you just didn't see how far did you KODAK; has lead to a lot more people making pictures. Or perhaps to split hairs - taking pictures - as the end product, the picture is immediately visible.

But this mood-board - copyist approach to photography has left out a very important part of what makes a picture work in the first place.

The IDEA!

The idea that becomes the concept that needs thinking about. Then the right collection of people and fashion brought together to pull it off. And mostly that idea can ONLY be fully realised because you have brought the right team together - it, the picture becomes a gestalt - where the image itself becomes greater than the sum of all the skills of all the individuals who have put it together. Think of those ICONIC images! Yes we mostly think of the photographers eye and timing - but.. and especially with fashion. What if the stylists choice of outfit was changed, the model, the make-up artist, the hair? Even the assistants are part of a well orchestrated machine of thought and ideas and actions. Swap out this or that and you will not have that same picture.

ICONIC images! The likes of which have never been seen before. Pictures a generation remembers and keeps remembering!!!

This is something that is I think essentially impossible to achieve with the 'new regime' of mood-board as starting point - facsimile the final position. These pictures will have no soul. And there are luscious, strange ironies when it comes to fashion photography done in a way that begins with an idea that becomes a concept brought to life. Even though a fashion picture is a real-photo, fashion should always be a fantasy which is something that is not quite real at all. When that fashion picture is based on an original idea and well made with a great team. That fashion picture, that fantasy holds something unique inside that is real: and that's something that a copy of a fantasy can never have.

And you know what. I think most people just don't care, have forgotten that great pictures can still be made. Have become so; so used to the quick flick of instagram and copy-copy-copy - as an original idea - they have forgotten that great images can be made and they go beyond, far beyond their initial purpose of creation - and go on being remembered. For a very long time. Come on, I haven't given up; let's kick some goals, let's take our time back; our ideas back; let's get it together and let's make photography great again!

More of my thoughts on photography here -

Mood Boards; that White-Gold Blue-Black Dress Mood boards, you are probably doing it wrong.

The Stove might be Terrific but it won't deliver Fantastic Pictures. Why it's the photographer not the camera.

Why this Photographer Closed his Instagram Accounts All still valid though I do have one again..

Travel Photography - The Charles Bridge in Prague is Seriously Great!

This is the first year I have ever taken a serious commercial interest in Travel Photography, and it's the "commercial" part of the statement that makes all the difference. Let me explain. Because naturally just like everyone else I have taken pictures while on holiday, on trips, on walks here and there, and of course shot fashion at innumerable locations.. but I have never photographed locations as destinations. Photographed them with an emphasis on showing others what this or that place might be like, to experience as a traveller. And maybe it's a(n odd) Sydney photographer thing, but it was not until last year that I created a commissioned portrait using the Sydney Opera House as a backdrop. Yes of course I have photographed that famous landlocked sea of sails, that iconic UNESCO listed building; but never before for a client! So in many ways, tourism and lifestyle photography represented something of a steep learning curve for me.
Vivienne, the Charles Bridge in Spring Prague by Travel and Lifestyle Photographer Kent Johnson.

We began with Singapore, Prague, Singapore, then France - Paris, Lyon and the Beaujolais countryside, more Paris - and then New York, all for a new Travel web site, White Caviar Life; which has as it's particular emphasis, luxury hotels and spending time indulging in the experiences of staying in one place, relaxing, enjoying the atmosphere. The hotel interiors I was certainly prepared for as I have experience with shooting commercial and residential interiors and architecture. And at least I would have some time to find my footing, my style shooting travel over our two week stay. As opposed to "Travel Man" the show I have been viewing with comedian Richard Ayoade which revolves around 48 hour "mini breaks" in destination capitals of Europe, just 48 hours!

I reference this as a counterpoint to the longer period of time that was made available to me to create the library of travel pictures we came away with. Fourteen days in UNESCO listed old Prague as opposed to what is no doubt a typical 48 hour stay where you may only see places of interest just the once was a massive advantage. Case in point, the astonishing Charles Bridge, Karlův Most over the river Vltava. Our two hotels were about 800 meters from the Bridge which saw me using it as a location for shots with my client; and also like a local as the shortest route to the (very old) New Town nearly every day - camera always at the ready. Never before have I seen so much human activity, excitement, flux, change, joy, celebration and urban and natural beauty as I experienced it on the Charles Bridge - stuff happens - which is truly; not simply a must see but also a must experience destination of a lifetime. As a photographer it was my great joy to be a part of all this transient thronging of the bridge over those two weeks in spring, and to hone my travel eye - here is just a smattering - travel pictures of Prague's Charles Bridge. All pictures are available for purchase - if you need travel scenes for publication on Prague or for any of the destinations mentioned above, and like what you see, please just drop me a line.

A Modelling Portfolio Photoshoot in Historic Prague

It's been a very busy year for me as a photographer with 3 trips overseas, Prague, Paris and New York. It all started way back in April; which was a chilly spring in Prague. The trips were all for the White Caviar Life website, you can see it here. Although the schedule was quite hectic, during our second week I did manage some work on the side for myself; which is how this modelling portfolio photoshoot with Nikola from Czechoslovak Models came about. Although I have been to Europe before. Lets face it, for an Australian, everything old in Europe is NEW, so where better to shoot than our 15th century accommodation and then the entrance to the Terraced Castle Gardens; just down the street. Prague is quite compact and packs a lot in so it's like a series of endless photography locations! So here she is; if you like what you see please contact me about your modelling or fashion photography project!
